The DJI Phantom 3 Standard is a good starter drone. But more than that, it’s a good drone, period. When it’s available as a DJI refurbished unit, it’s also a remarkable bargain. Add to that the dependable service of Commercial Drones, and you have one smart choice to go flying.

The Phantom 3 is the affordable quadcopter that really put quality drone photography and aerial videography within reach of the masses. This is not a barebones toy. The Phantom 3 is a useful tool for people who need to shoot aerial footage and stills to augment their ground photography. OK, so it’s also a lot of fun to fly. Go ahead and enjoy yourself. You’re allowed.

Refurbished Means Savings, Dependability

Let’s start with what a refurbished Phantom 3 is not. It’s not a used drone that’s thrown willy-nilly into a box and sent back out to another consumer. No way. Here’s what a refurbished Phantom 3 is: It’s a drone that has been returned for any of a variety of reasons — perhaps because of a malfunction but just as likely because it’s not what the original buyer expected or needed.

DJI’s professional technicians give it a thorough going-over, make repairs and test it before certifying it as a refurbished drone for sale at a discount.

It’s then given a new serial number ending in “R.” It carries a warranty identical to that of a new drone. The return policy, however, differs: A refurbished Phantom 3 Standard can be exchanged only for another refurbished DJI product.

Fast, Capable Flight

Once the Phantom 3 Standard takes off, and you give it the command, it really takes off. At less than 2.7 pounds with its battery onboard, the P3 can ascend rapidly, propelled by its four motors at more than 16 feet per second. It can descend at nearly 10 feet per second. The Phantom 3 Standard can exceed 35 mph, more than enough to keep up with subjects who are biking, skating, surfing, canoeing or running.

Phantom 3 can fly for up to 25 minutes on a single charge. Available extra Intelligent Flight Batteries let you return to base, quickly and easily swap out batteries and get right back in the air.

Phantom 3’s Precise Control

Every Phantom 3 comes with a remote controller that helps you fly right. You see what your drone’s camera sees because the remote controller hooks up to your smartphone or tablet. Images are transmitted live in 720p resolution up to .62 mile — that’s about 10 football field lengths.

The camera records what you see at higher 2.7K definition. A thumb wheel lets you tilt your camera up and down as you frame your photos and video. Twin spring-loaded sticks allow you to control your drone in flight — up, down, forward, back, right, left. Let go of the sticks and they automatically center, telling the Phantom 3 to stop and hover as it awaits your commands.

WiFi is built in, helping you to link to your Phantom 3 and see the live view, advanced onscreen camera controls, and a map of where you’re flying.  Linking is done with the DJI Go app, which is free. The remote charges by micro USB, and the controller alerts you when the built-in battery is running low. There’s even a loop to connect a lanyard if you wish.

DJI Go Simplifies Flight

The DJI Go app lets you fully control the drone manually or use programming that makes some tasks one-button friendly. Want to take off smoothly? Press a button on the smartphone screen and it will lift, hover, and await instructions. Want to get your P3 safely back to base? Press another button, and it automatically follows — in reverse direction — the safe path it just took.

Then press another onscreen button and the drone will land itself. Toggle onscreen between still and video shooting. Start and stop recording videos whenever you want. The program can even display telemetry information on screen.

Aerial Camera Stabilized by 3-Axis Gimbal

The camera on the Phantom 3 Standard shoots stills and video, with a preset focus optimized for aerial shooting. Stills are recorded at 12 megapixels and can be shot in bursts up to 7 frames per second. That’s better than many digital handheld cameras.

Stills are recorded as JPEG or DNG RAW files, which allows for more precise editing. Video is recorded at resolutions up to 2.7 K — nearly triple the resolution of the picture on your 1080P HDTV flat panel. Video records at 30 frames per second, and files transfer at 40 Mbps. The aperture is a fast f2.8. The sensor is 1:2/3 inch. To limit distortion, the lens is a 20mm equivalent in 35mm format.

The standard 3-axis gimbal makes video shake-free. Video shows no signs of the drone’s movement as it banks, rolls and vibrates while hovering or pursuing a subject. It’s the same principle Hollywood directors use, but on a much smaller scale.  All that matters to you are the results, and they’re smooth and sharp. The gimbal also helps the Phantom 3 Standard’s camera shoot time lapse photos.

Why wait to share video? If you want, send it live to YouTube. Download it to your computer for a bigger, more detailed view and for editing.

Precise Positioning with GPS

Built-in GPS lets you send your drone exactly where you want it to go. During flight, GPS sends its position to the DJI Go flight program. The GPS map shows you not only where the Phantom 3 is and how high it is, but also which direction it is facing. It remembers where it was if you want to return to resume recording at the same spot.  And it remembers its path, so it returns safely when you give the Return Home command. If the signal is interrupted, Return Home is activated automatically by DJI Go.

Customer Reviews

What does refurbished mean?  A refurbished drone is one that has been made fully functional after being returned for defects or because the buyer was not satisfied. It is fully tested before being resold at a discounted price.

How does the refurbished warranty differ from that of a brand-new Phantom 3 Standard? They are the same.

Can I return the Phantom 3 Refurbished? Yes, within 7 days of purchase if you find it defective or aren’t satisfied with it. However, it may be exchanged only for another DJI refurbished product.

Are refurbished Phantom 3 Standards designated differently from new models? Yes. The serial number on a refurbished drone contains the designation  “R” at the end.

What is the resolution of Phantom 3 still photos? 12MP.

What is the resolution of Phantom 3 Standard video? 2.7K.

Is 2.7K video considered high definition? Yes. It is a bit less than 3x sharper than the image on a 1080p TV.

Can the Phantom 3 Standard shoot stills in bursts? You can choose from 3/5/7 frames per second.

Can I share video? Share it live on YouTube, or upload it later to other social media after downloading it to your computer.. You can also e-mail it once you’ve dowloaded it to your computer.

Is the camera or lens interchangeable? No, each is fixed to the aircraft.

Does the lens zoom? No, it is a fixed length, equivalent to 20mm on a 35mm camera.

What is the angle of the camera’s field of view? 94 degrees.

Can I mount a different camera and gimbal? No. The camera and gimbal are not interchangeable. They can be replaced with identical units, but professional installation is recommended.

Is video stabilized? Very much so. A 3-axis gimbal cancels out movement caused by the flight of the drone, keeping the camera steady and the video shake-free.

Are camera filters available? Graduated filters are available in a set of three. Color and ND filters are available in sets of three or six. A UV filter also is available.

What is the range of the Phantom 3 Standard? About .62 mile, more than the length of 10 football fields.

How do I extend range? The FPVLR antenna upgrade for your Phantom 3 Standard remote controller increases range by up to 300 percent. Commercial Drones recommends professional installation. It’s affordable and quick.

How long can the Phantom 3 Standard fly? Up to 25 minutes on one battery charge.

How fast is the Phantom 3 Standard? It can exceed 36 mph. The P3 Standard can ascend at 16 feet per second and descend at 10 feet per second.

What’s in the box? You get everything you would with a new Phantom 3 Pro: remote controller, drone, gimbal-mounted camera, battery, charger, cables, props and manual.

Why isn’t the DJI Go app in the box? You can download it free from the Apple App Store or Google Play — whichever is appropriate for your phone or tablet.

Does the controller have a video screen? No, but it hooks to your smartphone or tablet to provide video and a touchscreen for commands. The controller does have an adjustable mount for a device.

Which smartphone operating systems are compatible with DJI GO? Your device needs to run on iOS 8.0 or later, or Android v4.1.2 or later.

Can two controllers be used simultaneously for the aircraft and camera? No. The included controller is used by one person for both the camera and drone.

Is video transmitted live to the controller? In 720p, while your camera records in 2.7K.

What happens if my P3 battery runs low while I’m flying? DJI Go warns you. Just push the button for Return Home and your drone follows its path safely back to you.

Is landing difficult? The P3 Standard will land itself. Just press the on screen landing button after you bring it home and to level ground.

Are spare parts and accessories available? Plenty, including tiny screws, vibration-absorbing parts, self-tightening propellers and replacement motors. Go to the parts/accessories page on Commercial Drones.

If the Phantom 3 crashes or has a problem, must I repair it myself? You can perform many simple repairs yourself — a broken landing gear, a burnt-out motor, or a compass replacement, for instance. But you can also go online to arrange for repairs or upgrades by Commercial Drones professional DJI-trained technicians.

What do the sticks on the controller do? They let you send commands to fly up, down, left, right, forward and backward.

How many flight modes does the P3 Standard have? Three: P-Mode, for beginners, and A-Mode and F-Mode, for more advanced users. They are selected with the S1 switch on the controller’s upper right.

What is the purpose of the S2 switch on the controller’s upper left? It triggers Return to Home when it is toggled several times.
